Woolworths has partnered with six of the country’s best wine makers to bring to life their exclusive Signature Series. Offering three reds and three whites, the range consists of a Sauvignon Blanc, a Chenin Blanc, a Chardonnay, a Shiraz, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Merlot.
Wine aficionado and Cape Wine Master Allan Mullins, who was instrumental in the selection and blending process on this exclusive project added, “I sought out only the top names in the wine industry to collaborate with, and I’m exceptionally proud of the outcome.”
Allan’s 27 years of experience blending and selecting wines for Woolworths gives him the unique vantage point of not only knowing the winemakers well, but also appreciating the tastes of the discerning Woolies customer too.
With wines to suit all palates and meal choices, Woolworths’ Signature Series makes choosing the perfect bottle of wine easier than ever, celebrating South Africa’s finest in every sip.
Included in this new and limited range:
Signature Series Sauvignon Blanc 2017 by Duncan Savage (Savage Wines)
Duncan has an intense love for wine and surfing, and has shared both with Allan. His maritime influenced Sauvignon Blanc is paired best with freshly caught snoek or yellowtail and enjoyed al fresco. This wine is made unwooded with lees contact, and the addition of Semillon provides mouthfeel and texture. A richly textured palate with a sea breeze freshness completes this vintage.
Signature Series Chenin Blanc 2016 by Alastair Rimmer (Kleine Zalze)
Every blend that Allan does with Alastair and his co-winemaker RJ Botha makes him marvel more at their creativity and this bottle is no different. A blend of five unique vineyard parcels, this wine has been aged in old, large oak barrels for eight months to add texture without detracting in any way from its flavours. Perfectly suited for seafood, this wine is best enjoyed with risotto, prawn curry or grilled crayfish.
Signature Series Chardonnay 2016 by Danie De Wet (De Wetshof)
Danie has been Allan’s genial Chardonnay mentor since the first blend they did together back in 1990, and this collaboration, having spent 12 months in first, second and third fill barrels, is another perfect example of De Wetshof’s excellent Chardonnays which have grown and thrived in their limestone and clay soils. The ideal accompaniment to seared tuna in a sesame seed sauce, the nose has a chalky minerality with citrus pear tones.
Signature Series Shiraz 2015 by Carl van der Merwe (De Morgenzon)
Carl is an intuitive and talented blender, who made Allan’s job very easy with the creation of this highly perfumed and elegant Shiraz which was aged in small oak barrels for 12 months and in larger ones for a further eight months. Perfect for rich oxtail casseroles and lamb shanks in winter, this wine comes from cool east-facing slopes and has violets, white pepper and concentrated berry fruit on the nose.
Signature Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 by Gyles Webb (Thelema)
Gyles’ ability to make suburb wines like this Cabernet Sauvignon is fuelled by his razor-sharp palate and wit. Best served with a large sirloin steak with Bernaise sauce, this wine has a classic blackcurrent and toasty oak spice on the nose with elegant, fine tannins and sweet fruit on the palate. After natural fermentation, the wine is matured in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new.
Signature Series Merlot 2015 by Frans Smit (Spier)
Giant but gentle, Frans’ generosity of spirit enriches his family, his team of winemakers and all his wines too. His dark ruby red, 50% of which was matured for 18 months in new French oak barrels, introduces black cherry, cassis, subtle mint and dark chocolate to a rich, layered mid-palate with dense smooth tannins. This wine is an ideal accompaniment to a Karoo lamb roast with mint sauce, roast potatoes and grilled vegetables.
Ideal as gifts or as a great addition to your own cellar, Woolworths has worked with the finest craftsmen in the country to bring you the Signature Series at a great price.
All red wines RRP for R159.99, and all whites RRP for R129,99.
