'Woolworths is delighted to have not only have been included in the JSE’s SRI Index for the third year in succession, but this year to have also been judged the top performer in the Medium environmental impact classification. This accolade serves to reaffirm Woolworths’ commitment to and belief in the emphasis that we place on creating a socially responsible business environment as well as creating a sustainable future, for our company, our stakeholders, and furthermore the environment and communities in which we operate. Sustainability is integral to everything that we do at Woolworths – our brand has, we believe, sustainable values at its very heart. We are in the end stages of developing the Woolworths sustainability index, with the aim to better manage and track these core sustainability and transformation values. Key indicators within the Woolworths sustainability index will be embedded in the organisation’s key performance indicators to ensure compliance and continual improvement. Being judged the top performer in the Medium environmental impact classification does not mean that we are the best that we can be; we recognize that we have a long way to go. The JSE’s recognition helps reward us for the work we’ve done and gives us context to challenge our behavior as a role player in building a socially responsible business environment.
